Traveling With Asthma

With the busiest travel days of the year upon us, I wanted to share some personal tips on preparedness! Whether you are hitting the road or flying the skies make sure you PACK YOUR ASTHMA MEDICINES WHERE THEY ARE READILY ACCESSIBLE AT ALL TIMES! Traveling exposes us to lots of triggers so it is wise to be prepared to handle that unexpected flare. Battery operated compressor nebulizer systems are ideal for traveling. The kids each have their own MiniElite systems...Don't forget to pack new tubing as well. If you are traveling by plane, let the TSA officers know you are taking it onboard. They will give it a special security check, along with the nebulized meds, but they've always let me take it on the airplane. Traveling with allergies? Don't forget your Epi Pen. It also needs to be with you during the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

Whether you're staying with family or at a hotel, COMMUNICATION IS KEY WHEN DEALING WITH TRIGGERS. Let family members know what your triggers are so they can eliminate them before your arrival. Remember, you have to BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE, so SPEAK UP and COMMUNICATE exactly what your needs are. I have had to let family members know, in a loving way of course, that they absolutely cannot smoke around us, they have to unplug the air fresheners, hold the nuts and put fido in the kennel! And Grandma, hold the perfume! You are sweet enough!

Hotel stays can be challenging as well. There are major hotel chains that offer allergy friendly rooms. Best pr
actice is to always CALL IN ADVANCE and make sure the staff knows to steer you clear of any "pet friendly" or "smoking" rooms. We also request no fragrance or feathers in the room. We avoid rooms near the swimming pool. Who needs the mold?

Traveling almost always throws us off our sleeping & eating schedules. Make sure you STAY ON TRACK with taking your asthma medicines and reading food labels to avoid allergic reactions. Remember to WASH YOUR HANDS often to avoid getting sick. It's sort of a joke in our family that I have hand sanitizer stashed everywhere when we travel! It's always good to add some comic relief to the stresses of traveling, so I don't mind them poking fun at my vigilance:)

SAFE TRAVELS!!!
